Nurse Florence® is a federally registered trademark in the United States and the United Kingdom.

The Nurse Florence® series is owned by Dow Creative Enterprises. Michael Dow is the man who owns the company. He writes this series to teach kids medical science. Inside each Nurse Florence® book Michael writes a note to parents explaining why he used the exact medical terms. He also dedicates the book to Florence Nightingale, the woman who created the Nursing profession as well as Arizona State University. On the back of each book there is this blurb:

Sometimes it seems only a nurse can bring technical information down to an understanding that an ordinary person can grasp. The Nurse Florence® book series provides high quality medical information that even a child can grasp. By introducing young kids to correct terminology and science concepts at an early age, we can help increase our children’s health literacy level as well as help to prepare them for courses and jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. We need more scientists so I hope that many children will enjoy this book series and consider a job involving science.

I have taken it upon myself to read and review each Nurse Florence® book as fairly as possible. While I understand that it might not seem fair for me to review these books since I’m currently working for the company, I will do my best to give a fair and unbiased review.

So, without further ado, let’s talk about Nurse Florence® How Do We Feel Pain?

This book is written, of course, by Michael Dow. In the story an elementary student, Sonia, gets a splinter. Sonia gets sent to Nurse Florence who removes her splinter and explains the medical terms of how the human body feels pain. She even speaks about the parts of the brain that feel pain and how illegal drugs can mess up our respective brains.

The premise of the story is a good one. It teaches kids in a way they will understand. The only issue I see with this is that the paragraph breaks need to be fixed. (That’s the inner English major in me speaking.) However, there are no grammatical errors, and it will benefit its intended audience. I applaud the fact that there are no grammatical errors. The story gets the point across.

I do also enjoy the fact that Nurse Florence appears different in every book. In this specific book she is a brunette caucasian wearing glasses. Alessa Baker is the illustrator for this particular book and her illustrations capture the mood of the book, the characters, the science, and Nurse Florence beautifully. I believe these illustrations are done in colored pencil. I think the partnership between Michael Dow and Alessa Baker will become very strong. Alessa Baker is a talented illustrator and I hope to see even more from this wonderful artist.
