Nurse Florence Promotes Diversity

Nurse Florence® is a line of children’s books dealing with medical science released by Dow Creative Enterprises. The medical science uses accurate terminology, and, in each book, there is a letter to parents explaining why accurate terminology was used. Another benefit to this wonderful children’s book series is that the title character, Nurse Florence, is always portrayed in different ethnicities.

There are 25 books out for Nurse Florence® with plans for more books to be released soon. The character, Nurse Florence, has been depicted as a Muslim woman, a Hispanic woman, an African American woman, and there is a book currently being produced where Nurse Florence is a Native American or Indigenous woman. The goal here is that children everywhere can relate to Nurse Florence and be inspired to take up jobs in STEM fields no matter the color of their skin and/or ethnic background.

Each different Nurse Florence character will help to bring diversity into the different STEM fields. Diversity is not a bad thing. Let’s get into the dictionary definition of diversity. According to the dictionary.com website one of the definitions of diversity is the following:

“the inclusion of individuals representing more than one national origin, color, religion, socioeconomic stratum, sexual orientation, etc.”

Let’s break this definition down even further.

It means that there is inclusion of individuals who have different skin colors, different nationalities, different religions, different areas of income for example, middle class families, working class families, rich families, single parent families, etc.

Diversity is a good thing for the masses. The more a person is exposed to the better off they will be. And for Nurse Florence, exposing children to different skin colors is beneficial and will crush ignorant stereotypes and bring about a positive change in the world.

So, give the gift of a good education to your child, pick up a book, and show them that no matter what skin color they have, they can be successful in anything they choose to do.
